The curtain lifts:
Welcome to The Mercy Project.
This is a multimedia experience that shatters the boundary between a novel and a soundtrack. You can explore the interactive website here on the navigation link (top right) and listen to the very first track over on YouTube:
But instead of me explaining the mechanics of how it all works, I want to hand the mic over to the author herself, Edith Whitfield. In her own words:
"Every novel about a musician has the same hole in it: you can tell a reader a song was extraordinary, but you can't make them hear it.
The Mercy Project is an attempt to close that hole. Hummingbird is narrated by a songwriter, and her songs are being released as she wrote them in the book — The Road Record on Wednesdays, Rust-Orange Chapel on Sundays on her YouTube page:
The voice singing them is generated, because a I can't sing like Mercy Grace Robinson and never will. The words are mine, and so is every decision inside them, and I'd rather say that out loud than have anybody find it out sideways.
Edith Whitfield"
Thank you Edith
